Dehydration may lead to mild, medium or severe loss of water and electrolytes from the body. A dehydrated patient experiences extreme tiredness and loss of energy that needs to be replenished. It can be done by subjecting the patient to oral rehydration or intravenous therapy using liquid glucose, carrot juice and other ingredients. Here is a discussion about what should be done and what should not be to deal with dehydration losses. Supply Sodium and Chloride Loss of electrolytes during dehydration is a concerning issue. These losses can be reimbursed through external supply. If you own a drug store, you can help your patients by maintaining the stocks of solutions that contain sodium and chloride and are especially designed for dehydrated patients. These ingredients are helpful in retaining the body fluids so that they are not lost extensively. ORS (oral rehydration solutions) are the best and easiest-to-administer sources of these electrolytes. Glucose and Fructose Sugars must also be supplied to the body of the dehydrated patients, but in the right quantities. Excess of sugar quantity can worsen the symptoms of diseases like diarrhea, making recovery difficulty for the patients. Liquid glucose, which is a popular flavoring agent in a variety of food preparations, is one of the best sources of sugars in dehydration. The main role of sugars is to help the patients regain energy which is lost due to continuous loss of water and minerals. These ingredients also assist the electrolytes in retaining the body fluids. Zinc and Potassium The two important minerals that can help the patients suffering from dehydrations are zinc and potassium. Zinc supplements are helpful for dehydration management in children as the mineral can reduce the duration and severity of dehydration. Apart from ORS, the mineral can also be obtained in the form of tablets manufactured for dehydration patients. Potassium is useful in maintaining proper functioning of muscles and nerves during dehydration. Other Things to Consume In addition to liquid glucose and electrolyte sources, the patients should be given vegetable soups with sufficient quantity of salt. Rice water, chicken soup and yoghurt are other recommended solutions. Most importantly, the patient must consume recommended amount of water obtained from a clean source or boiled and cooled. Things to Avoid Some people consider beverages like soft drinks as good sources of sugars that can help in replenishing the losses of dehydration. However, these beverages are hypertonic in nature and can cause extreme loss of water from the body. Apart from soft drinks, fruit drinks with added sweeteners and sweetened tea should be avoided. Commercially prepared oral rehydration solutions and liquid glucose preparations can be obtained from the online suppliers. As dehydration is a common issue among individuals from all age groups, you can maintain a good stock of these solutions at your store.
