What is Activated Alumina? Q&A About Activated Alumina丨Xintao Technology

2022-05-30

What is Activated Alumina?

Activated alumina is a porous, highly dispersed solid adsorbent made of alumina (Al2O3) with large surface area and micropores.

The surface of Activated alumina has the properties required for adsorbents, such as high porosity, adsorption performance, surface activity, excellent thermal stability, etc. Once the molecules are sucked into the pores of the activated alumina ball, it will actually interact with it. Combined, it will not be released without high temperature heating. Therefore, activated alumina is widely used as a catalyst and catalyst carrier for chemical reactions.

Activated alumina has extremely low water content and is an efficient desiccant in deep drying applications, suitable for heatless regeneration equipment, etc.

Activated alumina is white spherical porous particles. Xintao's activated alumina has uniform particle size, smooth surface, high mechanical strength, strong hygroscopicity, no swelling and no cracking after water absorption, non-toxic, odorless, insoluble in water and ethanol.

What is the Application of Activated Alumina

Activated alumina is commonly used as a desiccant to adsorb water molecules in the air or gases to keep things dry and reduce the humidity level.

As a cost-effective desiccant, it can be found on compressed air dryers to adsorb water molecules under harsh conditions.

It is also used as a catalyst in the manufacturing process of hydrogen peroxide gas and gasoline for purification and dehydration purposes.

Another popular usage of the activated alumina material is as a water filter to remove or reduce contaminants like fluoride, selenium, and arsenic from water, which is widely used in water treatment applications for home, commercial, and industrial.

It is also used to dry gases like propane for safe transportation of volatile gases to avoid corrosion and leaking.

Due to their strong adsorb capability, they are widely used to clean up toxic wastes, rainwater, and groundwater to remove soluble metals like lead and chemicals like arsenic.

It can also used in the Claus process, a desulfurizing treatment for natural gas.

Application of Activated Alumina Balls:
1. Desiccant.
2. Adsorbent.
3. Defluorating Agent
4. Arsenic removal agent.
5. Hydrogen Peroxide Adsorption.
6. Dechlorination agent
7. Oxygen & Nitrogen plant
8. Claus Catalyst.
9. Claus Catalyst , for Sulfer Recovery Unit

Is Activated Alumina Safe?

Due to the regular regeneration process of activated alumina, microbial contamination due to the use of filters does not occur. Therefore, it can be said that the use of activated alumina filtration or adsorption does not pose a risk.

What is the Difference Between Activated Alumina and Alumina?

Activated alumina is a porous solid form of alumina, which acts as an adsorbent.

Alumina, a white or almost colorless crystalline substance, is used as a starting material for aluminum metal smelting, and it can also be used as a raw material for various advanced ceramics to improve strength, such as Xintao's inert high-alumina balls.

What is Activated Alumina Water Filter?

Activated alumina (AA) is the only filter material specifically designed to remove fluoride and arsenic from water. A ceramic compound made of aluminum oxide with a very high surface-area-to-weight ratio, AA has a very high capacity for fluoride adsorption.

How do you Regenerate Activated Alumina?

Activated alumina desiccant is typically regenerated by your compressed air dryer. A heatless or heated compressed air dryer uses hot air or gas to regenerate the activated alumina. The heat removes the small water vapors and droplets that are trapped inside the tiny holes of the activated alumina.

Which Types of Activated Alumina do you Have and its Typical Application ?

a)KA401: is for as adsorbent.

b)KA402: is for defluorination.

c)KA403: is for absorption in producing H2O2.

d)KA404: is for catalyst carrier.

e)KA405: is for dehydrating and drying in air separation etc.
