The Raschig ring was developed in 1914 by Friedrich Raschig. It is the first invented random packing with fixed geometry. It has a simple shape with equal dimensions in height and diameter.

Large size Raschig rings (above 100MM) are generally filled by regular stacking, while Raschig rings size below 75MM are generally filled in random ways.

Metal Raschig rings are widely used in many packed towers, such as absorption towers, scrubber towers, and separation towers.
